If someone wants to prepare for a sprint, his training may consist of some practices, some stretches, and maybe some slight adjustments to a schedule. When someone trains for a marathon, they train for a few months rigorously in the same levels. And if someone’s training for the Olympics, they’ll train every moment they can for years to get to the level of competing for the Gold. Yeshiva is even higher than the Olympics: It’s training people for life!

How Is It Different From Shannah Aleph

In that vain, while the gains of learning for a year are incredible and crucial, a second year of intensive learning helps solidify the values and Torah learned to reach even higher levels throughout life. That second year, or Shana Bet, is a belief shared by yeshivas and seminaries around the world. In Derech, Shana Bet is for those serious about learning more: more intense, more focused, and more dedicated. Shana Bet are also mentors and leaders for the yeshiva. They will often learn with first year students, and help settle first years into the Yeshiva environment.

Shana Bet students have unique opportunities for learning from esteemed visitors and rabbis, including: Rav Yonason Sacks, Rosh Yeshiva of Landers; Rav Yitzchak Cohen, Rosh Yeshiva in YU; Rav Aharon Lopiansky; Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Greater Washington; and many more!

Students Looking To Transfer To Derech

Shana Bet’s often start some form of college in the afternoons, or may leave mid year to go to YU or Landers, whether after Chanukah or Post Pesach. While most colleges don’t accept more credits for Shana Bet, Landers College for Men and Touro University will accept an additional half year of learning.
